About the Journal

For the past few years NSPIRG has published the Journal of Social and Environmental Justice. We are planning to publish our 3rd edition in Spring 2018.  The journal is currently named as “Writing in the MARGINS”, and publishes research and writing from students from all campuses in Nova Scotia, as well as non-academic & community writing, and poetry.  We want to create a space to highlight and share some of this amazing work, both celebrating it in our present day, and archiving it so that it can be enjoyed in the future.  We’re excited about the future potential this project holds.


Job Description

The goal is to turn the selected papers into a published, journal both online and a physical document. Our anticipated timeline for release is early April 2018.


The person in this position would be responsible for:


  • Designing the layout of the journal
  • Formatting the journal (the papers, bibliographies, introduction, table of contents, page numbers, etc)
  • Working with the Journal editor about any graphic requirements related to the journal.
  • Working with NSPIRG staff to send the journal to print at a local publishing house.




  • Experience with layout creation.
  • Experience with layout software (most likely Adobe Indesign, but please be in touch if there is something else you use)
  • Experience working on project-based work with a timeline
  • Experience or knowledge of social justice and anti-oppression principles







Timeline and Pay

This is an honorarium position for $600.

Estimated hours of work:  ~40 hours


Estimated timeline:  Mid January– Late March, so that the final layout can be sent to print in April.




The Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (NSPIRG) is a non-profit, social and environmental justice research and resource centre. We are located in the Student Union Building at Dalhousie University. NSPIRG’s mandate is to empower, educate and inspire action on social justice issues in Nova Scotia. We are a student and volunteer-driven organization working within an anti-oppression framework.

NSPIRG has an anti-oppression hiring policy, which recognizes that access to jobs such as this is often limited to folks from marginalized communities. We also acknowledge that lived experience can be as valuable as formal training, but harder to “prove” in a job application. We encourage applicants to describe the unique contributions they, as individuals with diverse experiences would bring to the NSPIRG organization in their cover letter or resume.
